Butcher Block

Okay, friends, do not think less of me after reading this post. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and I am desperate for farm raised chicken.
So my aunt and uncle are raising chickens. I asked if I could be a part of the butchering process in exchange for some chickens.
We worked one Friday and Saturday morning and ended up butchering around 60 birds.
Here the cluckers are running around that morning, unaware of what is about to happen.

Our workspace...My aunt and uncle built out this area behind their house to do the processing. It worked out fabulously.

Ready for the first chicken.

All of the birds, ready to be frozen.

This was a great experience, so much better than I was imagining it would be, and I now have another notch in my "farmgirl" belt.

I used to help my grandparents out on the farm when they had chickens. It was actaully kind of fun, ya know watching them run around without their heads (it's grusome, but funny)! I hated the smell when they singed the feathers off though..yuck!! Glad you got to experience that!

I'd love to learn how to do this as well. We are hoping to get the city ordinances changed in our little town to allow us to raise a few chickens for eggs (and meat). I've watched videos but of course there's nothing like hands-on experience to learn how to do it.

Enjoy your farm raised chicken -- it tastes SO much better than regular, hormone filled chicken from the grocery store.

Wow, you are my hero! I really don't know if I could have done that. I am not proud to admit this but I get a little ansy picking up cockroaches, even if they are already dead. :) Way to go Sara, you are a true pioneer woman! :)
